Body image while in college

College is an exciting time, but it can also be challenging when it comes to body image. Social media, comparison with peers, and high stress can make it hard to feel comfortable in your own skin. There are a few steps you can take to improve your body image.

Ditch the Diet Mentality

First things first—let’s talk about diets. They might promise quick results, but they often lead to frustration and a cycle of feeling bad about yourself. Instead of focusing on restrictive eating, try to embrace your body as it is. Nourish it with foods you enjoy and that make you feel good.

Focus on What Your Body Can Do

Rather than fixating on appearance, shift your focus to what your body can do. Engage in movement that feels good and connects you with others in the community, whether that’s dancing, walking around campus, joining a hiking group, or making art.

Connect with Your Values

Engage in things that are important to you. Spend time exploring hobbies that bring you joy. If you value you friends, spend time reaching out to them and intentionally connecting. If you value social justice or other political issues, get connected with local clubs or organizations that give you opportunities to engage in your community.

Practice Self-Compassion

It’s normal to have days when you don’t feel great about your body. On those days, practice self-compassion. Remind yourself that your worth isn’t tied to your appearance and that it’s okay to have ups and downs.

Get Support

Improving your body image in college is about embracing who you are without the pressure to diet. Remember, U of A, ASU, and NAU all offer counseling services that can provide support on your journey to self-acceptance. You deserve to feel good in your own skin—just as you are.
